Reasons to Buy a Steel Kit Home

14th Nov 2011

Steel kit homes are steadily growing in popularity in Australia. The reason for this rise in popularity is that, in a country where home building costs are some of the highest in the world, steel kit homes provide affordable housing. There are several reasons for this.

First, a steel kit home, since it is shipped to the buyer in modules, is pre-designed. It usually comes in a standard design. A standard design means that the kit modules can be produced and sold in bulk, resulting in lower costs to the purchaser, helping to make this type of housing affordable.

Second, steel is an amazing material. Not only is it lightweight and durable but it is also impervious to termites and warping from bad weather. Because of the steel used in it, a steel kit home’s freight and labour costs can be substantially less than other types of housing. In addition, steel’s durability ensures that a properly built steel kit home can withstand most of the storms nature throws at it.

Third, steel kit homes are ideal for the owner builder. Whether the owner chooses to do all of the work himself, or instead acts as his own general contractor, contracting out only that work he prefers to leave to others, he saves a great deal of money by eliminating high builder’s overhead cost, which would otherwise be added into the cost of the house.

Finally, since many steel kit homes are sold with just the steel sheeting, the home owner can finish the home to his own individual taste with his own choice of sheetrock for the walls, fixtures, doors and other such items. By outsourcing some of the finishing tasks on his own, just like with the owner builder, he eliminates the high cost of builder’s overhead. This then allows him to put the difference to use in purchasing the furniture and other items he will need to make sure that the kit home ends up being, indeed, his ideal home.
