Meet Shinji - surfer and shed owner!

Nothing says Australian beach culture more than a surfer in a wetsuit carving up a wave at one of the many picturesque beaches this country has to offer.

And Shinji Kuramochi fits right into that mould as an avid surfer and well-known member of the Northern NSW surfer scene.  He also happens to be a proud Wide Span Sheds owner using his shed as a workshop for his surfboard shaping business.

Follow along with his story which brought him from his birthplace of Japan to Australia more than twenty years ago and how he found his love for surfing, surfboard shaping and sheds. 

"I'm so lucky to do this job and lifestyle,"

Shinji tells us after meeting him at a stunning Northern NSW beach. He has just finished surfing with his son and has a big smile on his face. Other surfers passing by call out Shinji by name. It is obvious that he is well-known and liked by his fellow surfers in this community. 

He goes on to tell us that he has lived in this area for twelve years now and is basically living the Australian dream: owns his own home on acreage with his wife and kids only a few minutes drive from the surf, runs his own small business doing a job that he loves and gets to do his favourite hobby any time he wants. 

And his recently completed Wide Span Shed was the cherry on top. 

After falling in love with surfing at 17 years old, Shinji decided to move to the country with some of the best surfing locations in the world: Australia.

His second love of surfboard shaping was discovered in 2001 when he began working at a surfboard factory in Sydney. It was there he discovered the job he was made for and quickly learned all the skills needed to do surfboard shaping for a living. 

"Shaping is a little like meditating," Shinji explains. "It's relaxing, like surfing. Shaping, surfing...I love both!"

Fast forward a few years and Shinji moved out of the big city to the beautiful beaches of Northern NSW. There was only one problem: he needed a workshop shed for his surfboard shaping business.
