What is a Farm Shed?

A farm shed is a building structure that is intended for housing agricultural equipment and supplies. Farm sheds are classified according to their use such as a shearing shed, hay shed, livestock shed, dairy shed, or farm storage. They can also be classified according to their design such as open front shed, or a gable end shed.

Whether for crops, livestock, equipment, or vehicle storage, a farm shed made from high quality steel is a great choice for long-term strength and resistance to fire, rot, termites, or other hazards. A steel building supplied by Wide Span Sheds provides a reliable solution for agricultural operations and with an up to 20-year BlueScope steel warranty, you can have confidence knowing that it will stand the test of time and provide a solid return on your investment.

Common Attributes of Farm Sheds

There are many types of farm sheds that serve different purposes. Some common attributes of farm sheds include high-quality materials, large storage space, durability, and easy installation. These features make the shed a valuable investment for farmers. You’ll also want to consider:

  • Natural light – To allow natural light to enter your shed, you may add fibreglass skylight roof sheets.
  • Ventilation – To keep your pets and goods cool and dry, consider adding a roof ventilator to your shed.
  • Large gable end opening - Provides extra clearance height for large machinery, hay, grains, or crops storage.
  • Open front design - These are a staple for most Aussies farms and rural properties as their the ideal solution for farming equipment, tools, machinery, and livestock.
  • Sufficient area - There should be enough space for your largest machine for repairing and storing and additional working area.
  • Site-specific load design - We can adjust your structural design to withstand elements such as earthquakes, snow, or cyclones.

Things to Consider when buying a Farm Shed

  1. What size do you need your farm shed to be? We recommend designing your shed to be 20% bigger than what you actually need so there's room for growth.
  2. Determine how tall you want your steel shed to be. Thinking of filling it with hay, machinery, or large vehicles? Make sure you’ve got the required clearance you need.
  3. Do you want a gable roof or a skillion roof? A gable roof shed will have more room inside, but a skillion roofed shed is easier to build and offers slightly less wind resistance.
  4. Do you need a loft space? If so, you need to make sure there is enough height within the building to accommodate this.

What Is a Skillion Roof?

A skillion roof is a single, flat sloped roof. Skillion roofs are also referred to as non pitch roofs or single pitch roofs. A skillion roof shed can be useful in many farm shed scenarios allowing for higher roofs and open bay shed designs. Skillion roof sheds can be easier to build and so can be cheaper in some cases.

Why Choose Our Steel Farm Sheds?

We provide the highest quality farm sheds in Australia. Single-column or back-to-back c150s - c350s purlins will be used to reinforce the structure, depending on your chosen site and the design of your shed. Australian BlueScope steel is used in the construction of our sheds, which are rated to withstand a minimum pressure of 450MPa.

With over 20 years of expertise, we can create any style of farm or rural shed at affordable prices. Call 1300 94 33 77 for a free quote, or fill out the contact form below for more information.
