Using Your Shed Roof for Rainwater Harvesting

31/07/24

Eco sheds Weather

Sheds provide a great opportunity for rainwater harvesting. The roof of a shed can act as an extensive surface for capturing rainwater. By installing appropriate gutter, downpipe, and spout systems, you can effectively direct and collect rainwater into barrels or storage tanks, reducing your mains water usage.

Establishing a water recycling system for your shed involves several essential steps. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind when starting.

Purpose & Application:

Clearly specify the purpose of your rainwater collection, as this will influence the design of your rainwater harvesting system. Typical uses include irrigation, plant watering, cleaning, and other non-potable household tasks. If you plan to use the water for drinking or cooking, you'll need to implement proper filtration and treatment to ensure it meets health standards.

Roof Material Considerations:

Take into account the material of the shed roof. Wide Span Sheds uses COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® finished sheeting for their roofs, which are designed with a smooth, metal surface to maximise water runoff. When it rains, water flows evenly across the surface, minimising wastage and erosion compared to traditional roofing materials. This design feature enhances the efficiency of water catchment.

COLORBOND® roofing is free from harmful chemicals or coatings that could leach into the water, unlike some roof materials that  may introduce contaminants into the collected rainwater. The paints used for COLORBOND® steel comply with the Australian Government’s Poisons Standard (the SUSMP) ‘Paint or Tinters’1 requirements for paint compositions applied to roofs or any surfaces to be used for the collection of potable water at the time of manufacture. Please refer to BlueScope Technical Bulletin 4 and BlueScope Technical Bulletin 15 for further detail.

Gutter and Downpipe Systems:

Make sure your shed has an efficient gutter and downpipe system to effectively channel rainwater from the roof to the collection point. Integrating our COLORBOND® roofs with these systems is straightforward, and Wide Span Sheds can help design your shed for optimal functionality.

Storage Containers:

Select storage containers made from materials appropriate for either potable or non-potable water storage. Consider factors like durability, resistance to sunlight, and algae growth prevention.

Pump and Distribution:

For irrigation purposes, consider installing a pump to help distribute the harvested rainwater. Plan the distribution system, including pipes and outlets, to effectively reach the target areas.

Water Treatment:

Depending on how you intend to use the water, consider necessary treatment options. Basic filtration may suffice for non-potable uses, while potable water may require additional treatments like UV disinfection or chemical treatment.

Maintenance:

Set up a regular maintenance routine for your entire rainwater harvesting system. This includes cleaning gutters, filters, and storage containers to ensure optimal operation.

Local Regulations:

Be sure to check and comply with local regulations concerning rainwater harvesting. Some areas may have specific guidelines or restrictions on rainwater collection and usage.

By considering these factors, you can design and implement an effective rainwater harvesting system from your shed roof that meets your specific needs. Contact Wide Span Sheds today to discuss your water recycling requirements, and we'll help you find the best shed for your needs.
